Giving You the Keys to get the Gold!
“Do you want any key… or the key that unlocks the gold?”
Student reach is the key. Parent reach is the gold. And parent reach? That’s your quick win for attendance.
Last week, I consulted on the issue of attendance. And schools are great when it comes to ideas that involve students - and on many levels. The students knew the campaigns, the prizes, the posters, you name it. From what I noticed, this school is heavy on ideas for students, and I understand that completely; they are in the business of kids. Staff are in the thick of it every single day. But what I didn’t hear much of were parent strategies.
A few, sure. Not enough. And if you think it's difficult to reach parents - or think parents don't care, well, you've lost half the battle.
It all boils down to one word: communication. If the parent piece isn’t aligned, it doesn’t matter how many posters you tape up in the hall. Maybe old efforts didn’t stick, or folks assume new ones won’t. Either way, schools can hand the keys back to the real drivers: parents.
Here’s the move: Invite, acknowledge, announce. Do it with fidelity and consistency. Same time, different formats. One small system touches everything: attendance, grades, homework, and volunteers.
So while your school may be “kid-friendly,” what’s your parent game? I’ll give you the idea, show you how to expand it, and set it up so it rolls on its own, without piling more on staff.
Measure before. Run it for a month. Measure after. See the shift.
And remember, this doesn’t just work for attendance. The real gold is using it for every school announcement.
